If you live or work in Shoreditch you have to venture down the path less trodden to find excellent coffee. Although coffee shops are popping up like wild flowers the difference in quality between some cafes, is quite surprising.
Here are my three local favourites (in no particular order) that I go to every week.
- Shoreditch Grind
- (next to Old Street Roundabout)
Shoreditch Grind is an independent Espresso Bar on London’s Old Street Roundabout serving amazing coffee and food prepared by fanatic baristas. They often experiment with artistic milk pictures on your coffee, the most popular in recent weeks being a swan!
- Dunne Frankowski (18 Hewett Street – off Curtain Road, close to the NSPCC HQ).
Rob Dunne and Vic Frankowski, previously of Fitzrovia coffee bar Tapped & Packed, started this slick, minimalist coffee bar near to my office, and it quickly became a local hit. The emphasis is on quality, and personal service – most customers are greeted by name, and a smile. Based underneath PR company Protein, there is also a gallery at the back, including a recent show by Daniel Johnston.
Barrista’s have an eclectic taste in music, played on their iPad, and in the interests of transparency they display a graphic of how many cups of coffee they have sold that day/week, and the times when they are the most busy.
- Taylor St Baristas http://www.taylor-st.com/locations/locations_shoreditch.html) Slightly off the beaten track in Clifton Street (a couple of streets back from Great Eastern Street), and housed in a garden shed (I kid you not!) in an old dairy, next to Vice magazine HQ.
Ask at the bar about their band, who are performing in Hoxton and Camden in May.
The London coffee festival
The second London coffee festival is taking place this weekend (27-29 April 2012) at the Truman Brewery close to Spitalfields market and Brick Lane (www.londoncoffeefestival.com) and will be a good opportunity for coffee lovers to sample the velvety smooth flavours of the best coffee shops/cafes in London, and enjoy the wide range of food available.
Have I missed anything? If there are any local gems that I have overlooked (that are within ½ mile from Shoreditch) then please let me know.
Philip Henson (employment lawyer and coffee lover)
Thanks for stopping by!
