RIP Amy Winehouse – Phil’s playlist for August 2011
I wanted to also pause to reflect on the immense talent of Amy Winehouse whose death has shocked many fans across the Globe, myself included.
I had the pleasure of seeing Amy perform live twice, once at a magical Billie Holliday tribute concert (Billie & Me curated by Neneh Cherry) in 2005 at the Barbican, London - with Neneh Cherry, Fontella Bass, Susheela Ramam and many others. Then years later her comeback gig in a tiny subterranean venue in Holborn where she performed Back to Black with a new incredibly smartly dressed backing singers and horn section; who were keen to show off their bespoke dancing.
I recall feeling a shiver down my spine in that incredibly hot basement venue – despite there being no air conditioning or even the faintest hint of a breeze on the air- thinking that we were all witnessing a piece of history. Just as at the Holliday tribute concert Amy owned the songs she covered, (complete with a pumping bass backing), her talent shone through the second time that I saw and she looked happy and proud; and that is how I will remember her.
